Medical Payments (MedPay) Coverage:

What is it and how does it work?

What is MedPay?

MedPay is an add-on to your car insurance policy which covers expenses related to vehicular accidents. Sometimes it can even be added to your homeowner’s insurance policy. MedPay can be used after any accident, regardless of who is at fault. MedPay is supplemental to your health insurance. Depending on which health insurance policy you have, primary coverage will then be determined.

What does MedPay cover?

MedPay covers you and any passengers in your vehicles, any pedestrians you may injure, and you-if you are riding as a passenger in another vehicle or are injured by a vehicle as a pedestrian, bike rider, or public transportation rider. Since MedPay will cover the other people in the car, it might be a good idea to have it if you regularly carpool.

After an accident, MedPay can cover several types of expenses including EMT and ambulance fees, hospital visits and stays, doctor visits, surgery and x-rays, professional nursing services, prosthetic limbs, dental procedures needed as a result of an accident, injuries sustained as a pedestrian or riding a bicycle if a vehicle hits you, and funeral costs.

If I have health insurance, do I need MedPay?

It depends on how your health insurance policy is structured and where you live. If your health insurance policy excludes injuries related to a car accident, that could leave you responsible for high out-of-pocket expenses. Having MedPay can help pay for those expenses and give you peace of mind. Following an accident, if an injured person wants to see a particular medical specialist who isn’t on the person’s regular health insurance plan, MedPay gives them the opportunity to choose doctors whom they might otherwise have to pay entirely out of pocket.
If your health insurance covers car accidents, you will most likely be responsible for paying a deductible or copay before your insurance kick in. MedPay can reimburse you for those costs.

When/ how can I add MedPay to my existing policy? How much does it cost?

You can add MedPay coverage to a policy at any time over the phone or through your online account. MedPay often costs less than $10 per month, depending on your insurance policy, and does not require the policy holder to pay any deductibles or copays. The cost goes up with higher coverage limits, though.
MedPay is purchased for each individual vehicle. If you have two vehicles you must purchase MedPay for both if you wish to have coverage on both vehicles.

I’ve been in an accident; How do I use my MedPay coverage?

Once you or your attorney has notified your insurance company that you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident, they will open a MedPay claim for you. You can then start submitting medical bills to be reimbursed.

What isn’t included in MedPay?

MedPay coverage does not include lost wages, medical treatment not related to the accident, or replacement services (childcare, housekeeping, etc.).
